My version is a little bit different from the original in that I incorporated the head technique from some of Dan Blanton's flies. Although this is primarily intended as a pike fly, I fish it most often for largemouth bass when I feel a large bite is what is called for.
Tying instructions:
- Tie in a rabbit fur strip, leather side down, and the bend of the hook along with a few strands of flash material.
- Advance your thread to near the hook eye.
- Tie in three or four clumps of marabou such that it surrounds the hook shank. Trim the butts to a taper, which will form the basic shape of the head.
- Tie in a short length of red chenille and make a single turn at the rear of the head.
- Tie in a longer length of black chenille in front of the red and wrap it to the hook eye, tying off.
- Snip the stems off the back of a pair of solid plastic eyes and glue them onto the sides of the chenille head with "Goop" or some other thick waterproof cement.
