Some friends and I take an annual trip to a small lake in northern New York that has an excellent population of largemouth bass. The largest bass we've taken thus far fell to a tube jig. During the ensuing year, I thought of ways I could duplicate the action and look of a tube jig in a fly, and this is the result. It has been a VERY good fly.

Tying instructions:

  1. Tie in the dumbbell eyes slightly back from the hook eye with several tight figure eight wraps.

  2. Tie in the tail material behind the eye and work your thread toward the bend, binding the tail material to the top of the hook shank.

  3. Tie in a length of Estaz at the bend and advance your thread to the hook eye.

  4. Wind the Estaz up the hook shank, including a few passes around and between the dumbbell eyes, ending at the hook eye.

  5. Tie off the Estaz and whip finish.
