One Feather Marabou Leech

Fly: Bruce Salzburg, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: TMC 3761 or 5262, size 10
Thread: Black, 6/0
Eyes: Lead barbell type, plated
Tail/body: One black marabou plume

Tying instructions:
  1. Start the thread and tie on the eyes on top of the shank with figure 8 wraps, and base wraps (simply wrapping horizontally under the eyes) about one third back on the shank. Wrap the thread back to the bend.
  2. Stroke the fibers of the marabou plume toward the tip, and tie the plume in as a tail, about two shanks long. After securing the tail with several firm wraps, wrap back to behind the eye on the shank only.
  3. Twist the rest of the feather into a rope, and wrap it forward in tight turns to the eye. Tie it off behind the eye, trim the feather butt, and whip finish.
