Old Master

Fly: Cal Mohney, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Mustad 3906 #16
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer ash (Grey), unwaxed
Rib: Rock Dove
Body: Tying thread
Hackle: Feather from the inside of a Woodcock's wing
Note: The original pattern uses undyded Heron herl. But an excellent substitute hurl is the skirting feathers of a Rock Dove (the urban blight it’s self, the pigeon). The pigeon here molt their feathers around the end of August. The squared end, dark feathers are the ones to be collected. You can also dye some of the above mentioned feathers a “Light Olive” to match the patterns that require “dyed olive Heron herl”. The “Old Master” is included in T.E. Pritt’s book “North Country Flies”, And works well for me
