This fly is typically used as a beetle imitation. We used to walk along the lake shores, scanning for trout, and then cast ahead of the cruising fish and let it swim upon the floating fly. But only your leader, no fly line, can be laying on the water or the fish bolt like a cattle prod hit them. Quite often the fly might be within inches of the shore.
