Thorax Style PMD

Fly: Eric Peper, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: #18 TMC 101 or equivalent
Thread: Olive 6/0 prewaxed
Tails: tied split, a single medium dun microfibbet on each side
Abdomen: McLean's Quillbody in PMD color
Wing: medium dun Zelon
Hackle: medium dun, clipped even with hook point on bottom
Thorax: Spirit River "fine & dry" PMD dubbing

Tying instructions:

Tie in tails and split using tying thread. Tie in wing material and clip off stubs at tie in point. Tie in quillbody material and wrap forward to base of wing. Tie in hackle just behind wing. Dub thorax material onto thread and wrap in; one turn behind wing, balance in front. Wrap hackle, palmering over thorax. Begin with two turns behind wing, finish with three turns in front and tie off at eye and whip finish. Finish fly by clipping bottom of hackle even with hook point.

Notes:

This is another pattern that has evolved through several variations over about 25 years. The changes to the design have been more a function of improved modern materials than any need to change the basic structure of the fly.
