Deer Hair Floating Nymph

Fly: Goran Grubic, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: dry fly, # 14-8
Thread: 3/0 black or brown
Tail: deer or elk hair
Body: spun and clipped deer hair
Collar/head: roe deer hair

Variations: can be tied with various body colors, and without tails to suggest various insects hatching in or near the surface.
Note: for small hooks the best is roe deer hair, while on bigger hooks European red deer, and American whitetail or elk may be used. When treated with floatant stays in the surface film. Untreated tends to sink very slowly.
