Ajax-fly

Fly: Henk Verhaar, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: TMC 700 (long shank limerick; steelhead wet)
Thread: black UNI 8/0
Tail: moose body
Ribbing: fine round silver tinsel
Body: modern synthetic floss (Oral-B satinfloss, nice mint flavour...)
Wing: red and white feather strips, married; here duck flight primaries
Throat: black (dyed) saddle hackle fibers, tied false hackle style
Note: This is a fly I tied for a swap that had football teams as its theme. Since we have soccer, not football, I chose a soccer team, Ajax Amsterdam, as theme. Ajax plays in white shorts and red-and-white shirts... A good opportunity to practice making married feather wings. If it taught me one thing, it is that half the job is in using first class materials -- which, needless to say, I found out I didn’t have ;-)
