Weed Guard Pike Fly

Fly: Henk Verhaar, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: anythink strong, sharp and 6/0
Thread: flat waxed nylon
Weed guard: 100/00 mono
Tail: assorted saddle hackles
Body: rabbit zonker strip, hackled (preferably cross cut, although not strictly necessary)
Collar: deer hair
Head: deer hair
Note: Just a pretty average Dahlberg diver type fly, a little more elongated than average.
Weed guard is tied 2/3 down into the bend first thing. Then the fly is tied as you would normally. Make a narrow whip finish, and attach the mono to the underside of the whip. Measure the final size of the guard loop and pull through an additional 10-15 mm. Finish the whip with a firm knot. Cut the mono 15mm beyond the knot and melt the end to a knob. Let it cool and then pull the mono loop back until the mono knob is seated firmly against the end of the whip finish knot.
