Shipman's Buzzer Variant

Fly: Hans Weilenmann, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Sprite Perfect International #12
Thread: Benecchi 12/0, black
Breathers, front and aft: Fine antron, clear
Rib: Copper wire, fine
Body: Seal's fur, black - into split thread
Note: One of the groundbreaking stillwater surface patterns. Dave Shipman's buzzers are extraordinarily versatile. He invented this 'damp' dry fly pattern in the late Seventies for surface feeding trout on Rutland Water reservoir in Eastern England.
I prefer the more subtle copper wire ribbing over the flat silver tinsel used in the original.
