Baby Box Fish

Fly: Jim Cramer, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Mustad 3407,34007, or other salt water hook. Size 2-6
Thread: Black
Tail: Four multivarient hackle tips tied spayed, four white rubber legs and two strands of pearl Crystal Flash. Tie in on the bend so they will extend upward when the fly is inverted.
Eyes: Lead or brass. I recommend using larger sizes than normal to compensate for the thick wool body. I have tied the eyes in at both the front and at the rear of the hook and can not detect any difference.
Body: Ram's wool, Olive, Cream, Brown, Black, Gray, etc. Mix and stack. Trim to football shape

Note: A bonefish fly for special occasions. While most bonefish flies tend to be sparse, the Baby Box Fish has some meat on the hook so to speak. This fly does not land softly so I most often use it on high wind days when fishing knee deep water. The mass of the fly helps the leader turn over in a hard head wind, and chop on the water masks the splat of the fly hitting the surface.

As you tie the body, it speeds the operation if you just clip off a part of the excess wool as you go, and tie it in again as the next bunch. Try to achieve a camouflage effect matching the bottom color of the area you will be fishing.
