Duran's Loop Bunny Leech

Fly: Jude Duran, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Daiichi 1720 #8 - #12 (or equivalent 3x long shank hook)
Thread: Fl. Fire Orange UTC 6/0
Tails: Long rabbit hair from pelt, about length of shank
Body: Dubbed hair's ear in appropriate color
Overbody/Abdomen: natural or appropriate colored bunny hair see notes

Notes: First, I cut fur off the rabbit hide and tie in a fairly long, sparse tail. Then, I dub the hook with hare's dubbing and tie in a dubbing loop at the end of the hook. I use a dubbing loop that is 3-4 inches long to make the work easier. Next, cut some more long fibers from the hide (not too many or too bulky) and put them in between the dubbing loop with the tips facing one direction. Do the same thing until the dubbing loop is full of long fibers. I like to taper the fur on the loop so that my long fibers are towards the front of the fly (closest to your dubbing whirl). Once, the rabbit fur is inside the dubbing loop tapered and not clumped together, spin the loop to lock the fur inside the loop. Then wrap one turn of the loop around the rear of the shank. Before you take each following turn, wet your fingers a bit with some water and brush the fur back. After you brush the fur back, take another turn of the loop and so on until you reach the head of the fly. Tie off the dubbing loop, create a tapered head, and cement. The result is a bunny leech pattern that is durable, lifelike, light and easy to cast.
