Fly: Jax Murray, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Mustad R30 # 14
Thread: Black Polyester 6/0
Tail: Brown Calf Tail
Body: Tying Thread
Wingpost: Brown Calf Tail
Hackle: Brown Whiting 100s cock

Tying instructions:

  1. Wrap hook shank with tight close turns of thread from eye to start of bend.

  2. Spiral Thread back to 1/3 short of eye.

  3. Select a small bunch of Calf Tail Long enough to allow for the wing and tail. I like to leave enough material to allow for trimming if necessary.

  4. Tie the Calf Tail [Butts Facing the Bend] in on top of the shank at the point where the thread is hanging and wrap back to the start of the bend with tight close turns of thread. Half hitch.

  5. Run the thread back to the wing with close turns and Post the Wing Upright. Take four or six turns of thread around the base of the wing, and finish off with a half hitch behind the wing.

  6. Tie in the Hackle Shiny Side Up. Wrap 5 or 6 turns of hackle round the base of the wing with each turn Positioned under the one before. Tie off the hackle and trim off any excess material.

  7. Whip finish and apply Head Cement.
