Sow Bug

Fly: Joyce Westphal, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: wet fly or scud
Thread: I usually use red but any color will be fine
Shell: plastic bag
Rib: fine copper wire
Body: pearl sparkle sow/scud dubbing

Tying instructions:


  1. With hook in vise, tie on copper wire, plastic bag strip.

  2. In a dubbing loop place the dubbing and spin, it should look spikey.

  3. Pull down bag strip and tie off.

  4. Wind with copper wire.

  5. Using gun cleaning brush, brush out body vigorously. Trim so the sides are rounded and the bottom is flat.
