BWO Breakout Emerger

Fly: Loren Williams, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Mustad C49S
Thread: Light Olive or Brown
Tail: Olive Mallard Flank
Abdomen: Black-Olive dubbing
Wing: Short clump of Muskrat fur
Wingcase: Appropriately colored (light olive) synthetic dubbing with long fibers, twisted to form a rope and tied in like a wingcase. This imitates the dun “breaking-out” of the nymphal shuck.
Thorax: Same as abdomen; picked-out at the sides
Legs: Olive Mallard Flank

Note: My “Breakout” emerger is simply my effort to imitate the stage of emergence where the dun is just beginning to show. Just beyond a floating nymph. I feel the attitude in the water is appropriate, and the ‘extras’ up front indicate enough of the chaos of emergence to trigger a strike but still keep the pattern simple.

These patterns (Breakout series) clearly show the influence of Steve Sywensky (State College, PA) in my tying. His ability to find the best material for the job is unique, as are his skills at creating dubbing blends.

I typically fish upstream in the film. I do not dress the fly with floatant, but I may dress the last few inches of my tippet. If you chose to dress the fly, only do so to the thorax, not the wing or abdomen.
