Diving Caddis

Fly: Mark Libertone, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Mustad 3096 or 3399A 12-16
Thread: Olive
Egg sack: olive floss or embroidery thread tied near the tail end of the body
Rib: Fine gold tinsel
Body: Natural hare’s ear with guard hair left in
Hackle: Brown partridge

Note: This is my variation of a diving caddis soft hackle. The floss or thread egg sack adds a touch of realism to the fly and the soft body, hackle and the spark of tinsel adds life. Many caddis and mayflies dive beneath the surface to deposit eggs. This fly represents this trait. I use it often fishing it with the Leisenring lift during any time of the year.
