Background:
Just to add another one to the hundreds of "Grayling killers" around, here is the Chenille Dun. I can't remember where I got this from but I haven't seen it in print anywhere so I might add it here because it is so easy to tie and damn effective. Not a very robust fly. One to three fish normally will break its neck. But you can tie over a dozen in an hour, so what the heck. Just tie on another one, keep the wet one to ty another fresh Chenille Dun with it later!
Very deadly for grayling but trout too! If you want it to float lower in the surface just clip off the CDC fibres on the underside.
Tying instructions:
- Wind on thread of your choice (nice if colour fits the hackle and abdomen colour or you can add a touch of attraction by using fire orange).
- Take a short length (about 3-4cm) of micro chenille and burn the end very quickly with a firelighter. Don’t hold the chenille too long in the flame or you will have ruined it. If you do it right this will create a nicely tapered body. With some experience you can make the body slimmer or fatter just as you like.
- Wind on the tapered micro chenille in the right length (depends on the hook size).
- Make a dubbing loop and put in some CDC fibres (the perfect method for this is the method Gerhard Laible from Germany made popular; you will have to search for that I am afraid, but you will find it eventually in some book or magazine). Wind on the CDC-"chenille" and pull back the fibres on each turn. Whip finish. That's all!
