Orange Glassbead Wet Fly

Fly: Marcus Ruoff, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: any old wetfly hook or a more sophisticated on with a longer, slightly bent hook shank; in this case a Tiemco 2302 or 200; sizes 14-20
Head: orange glassbead that does not go over the hook eye (a continuous nuisance to locate suitable beads)
Thread: orange thread (fire orange)
Body: orange thread (fire orange)
Wing: bunch of CDC fibers
Thorax: some CDC-fibers dubbed
Background:
Again a very easy tie. This has been a super-effective fly for me in clear water (e.g. in Austria) fished wet-fly style with a downstream swing. I think its success is because of its sparseness and of course the colour orange which is a fish puller. I “developed” this pattern (like probably one hundred others before me) when I fished a sparse CDC Buck Caddis with an orange body. I caught so many fish on this fly that it already sank and was just a few turns of thread and a few CDC-fibres. I fished this fly all day either upstream or with a downstream swing with sometimes one fish per drift, till nothing but five turns of thread were left and I gave it a rest.

I have since added the glass bead as it looks nice, gives a bit of weight and because I found it very cheap in a local DIY-shop..

Tying instructions:
  1. slip glass bead onto the hook

  2. form a body with your fire orange tying thread

  3. tie in some CDC-fibres you pulled from a feather on top

  4. dub on some CDC-fibres to your thread very sparsely and wrap a small thorax

  5. whip finish or make a few half hitches to complete the fly
