Petru Dima

Born in ’56 I started to fish when I was seven and now when I am in my best years of my life I can not live with out it.

In the beginning my primary goal was to catch more fish than my friends. Now the fish are not so important. The fish is a bonus and to take a picture and released I do more often. But in special occasion I keep a fish or two to fix a good meal and shared together with a glass of Italian wine with my family and friends.

I am fly fishing because is the best way for me to spend some time with “The Mother Nature” and I love to do it together with other fanatics like myself.

I started to tie because I needed to do something creative with my fingers and at the same time to get some flies for my fishing. The “new/old” braiding technique, which I use today to tie my flies, is a way to combine two things. For the first the flies are getting much, much stronger and for the second more beautiful. The possibility to braid all kind of materials from synthetic floss to natural ostrich is a fantastic way to spend the time in front of the vice. To design new flies, to plan the colours and the material combinations are so much fun that is very difficult to describe in words. You must to try ’it. My tying philosophy was from the beginning that if I tie some flies they must to be fishable. I am not tying flies to show-off. I tie flies for fishing. The simple fly can be elegant and beautiful. For me is not so important how many tying moments are in to a pattern. The most important thing is that the fly has a delicate form and is in good colour balance. How well I succeed to apply my philosophy in practice? I don’t know. I am not a very good tier with tens of years of professional experience. I try to make my best all the time and I want to believe that I am getting a better tier with each ended fly. You should be the judge of my struggle and you are welcome to e-mail me and tell your opinion about my flies.

It is a cruel world now adays, outside our doors. We must learn to appreciate and respect the goodness of the people and their contribution to our modern society, their ethics & moral conduit and not just to respect them for their “fat” bank account.
