Note: With the red stained Sally, concentrate these coats toward the head/thorax end, this gives the graduation in colour. Apply the lighter red to the whole fly first, then concentrate the darker stain around the head/thorax.

| Thorax 'blood': | A spot of red marker pen on the floss behind the eye before applying the Sally |
| Coat 1: | Clear |
| Coat 2: | Pale red (very light stain from red marker pen) |
| Coat 3: | Darker red |
