Deer Hair Sedge

Fly: Bob Wyatt, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Kamasan B-401, light wire emerger
Thread: tan 6/0
Rib: tying thread tag, left long to be used to rib body in a counter-wrap
Body: Seal’s fur, mixed to desired color and shade. Suggestions: for Scottish and Irish lochs; 70-30% mix of black to dark claret; or 70% hare’s mask to 30% golden olive SLF. On brighter days, a silver tinsel body can be excellent, sometimes with a fluorescent green tag. For western North American freestone streams; dubbed hare’s mask is deadly
Wing: Deer hair, bunched (stacked if desired). I usually use hair of a relatively light tone - it is easier to see on the water and might just work better than a darker hair
Thorax/head: butts of deer hair, clipped to semi-muddler style

Note:

A standard pattern, and possibly the most reliable 'loch style' fly for the northern Scottish lochs in June and July, despite the local tradition of the heavily hackled 'bumble' . Fished slowly in the 'bob' position on a two fly cast, it is simply irresistible to loch brownies. Best fished in a rippled surface.
