I was born and raised in Michigan about 2 hours west of the Escanaba River
(the actual river of Hemmingway's Big Two Hearted River). As a native YOOPER
(U-per), I started fishing at the age of five and hunting shortly
thereafter. I came to fly fishing over 25 years ago on a dare, catching a
28-inch Steelhead as my first fish on a fly rod. I have been passionate
about fly fishing for steelhead ever since. After leaving the corporate
world and becoming an American failure, I moved to the Pacific Northwest
with its rugged brash young mountains and the legendary Steelhead Rivers of
Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. I now almost exclusively
use a Spey rod to cast beautiful flies to magnificent salmonidae. Besides
fly-fishing and fly tying I enjoy teaching fly casting and fly tying, and
taking macro-photographs of flies. My first passion remains reading,
especially reading about fly-fishing and its history.
