Wing: | White calf tail (calf body hair works too but calf tail creates a fuller wing) |
Body: | Peacock herl, then red floss, then peacock herl, roughly equal lengths |
Hackle: | Coachman brown, wrapped very full |
The Royal Wulff seems to be the most common lure used for the big browns. I think there are three reasons this particular fly has risen to such status in New Zealand. First, it floats very well in rough water. Second, the guide or spotter can easily see the white wings. Third, the notoriety of the Wulff series gave it a start and the fish seemed to like it. |
