Callibaetis Spinner |
|
|
|
Hook: | #16 TMC 101 or equivalent |
Thread: | Black (or gray) 6/0 prewaxed |
Tails: | tied split, a single white microfibbet on each side. Tailing fibers should be 2 - 2.5x the shank length to mimic the natural insect. |
Body: | stripped grizzly hackle quill |
Hackle: | grizzly, palmered over thorax and clipped flush with the body on the bottom |
Thorax: | medium gray rabbit dubbing |
Tying instructions: Tie in tails and use tying thread to split. Tie in the stripped grizzly hackle quill, wrap forward and tie off about a quarter shank length back from the eye. Tie in a grizzly hackle. Dub thorax. Palmer hackle over thorax and tie off and whip finish. Clip hackle flush with body on bottom of fly only. Notes: This is a pattern that has evolved over the 25-plus years I've been fishing the Callibaetis hatch and spinner fall on the Henry's Fork. The current, quill-bodied iteration has been in use for the last two trips, and it seems to be accepted a bit more willingly than its predecessors. |
