Fur-bodied Ant

Fly: Eric Peper, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: 14-22 TMC 101
Thread: Black 6/0 prewaxed
Body: two segments of dubbed fur in all black, all red, all cinnamon, or half one and half the other
Hackle: Medium dun or medium ginger, tied as a "waist" between the two body segments

Tying instructions:

Form a spherical body segment just over the hook point with several wraps of thinly dubbed thread. Tie in and wrap 5-6 turns of hackle. I like a hackle just a shade undersized for the hook size, as it allows the body to float a bit lower. Dub the second body segment in front of the hackle and whip finish. Visually, I prefer the forward body segment to be just a bit smaller than the rear, but I don't know that it matters.

Notes:

The ant is staple in my flybox for fishing anywhere, but year after year it has proved absolutely indispensable on the Henry's Fork. On those days when half dozen different insects are in evidence, the ant often is the best "catching" fly, if not the best matching fly. While all black is my "go to" selection, based recommendations and experience obtained on my most recent trip, I'm starting to like a mix, using a black rear segment and red on the forward.
