Note: Single hook pike flies need a 3/0 to 6/0 hook. Longer shanks negatively influence the hooking power of the fly. These flies are made with large size wire brushes made with any type of thin flash material. To build a taper into the body, the flash material is cut up into bunches of different length, and put between the brush wires from long to short. Twisting the brush can only be done on a large dubbing brush machine, in which the support can be removed when twisting, such as the roots machine or the twister. A wire pet fur brush is an indispensible tool when making such brushes. The brush should be combed out continuously while twisting, starting as soon as the wires have gripped the flash material tightly enough so that you do not tear it out when combing. You can either make a fly with one brush body and a fritz (estaz, ice chenille, or whatever name it is known under) head, or with a double brush body and an epoxy head with stickyback eyes.
