Taperized Antron Baitfish

Fly: Henk Verhaar, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: any long shank wet fly or streamer hook. size 8 or so
Thread: 6/0
Body: dark (back) and light (belly) antron yarn
Gills: red angora goat or seal’s fur dubbing, in a loop
Head: rabbit fur, in a hair hackle loop
Note: This basically is a pattern to show the use of the taperizer, or effilating scissors. The body is built up by tying in bunches of dark and light antron, alternating top and bottom of the hook. Each bunch is taperized before tie-in by cutting across with the taperizer at four or five equally spaced places. Three bunches per side, from the center of the shank forward, should be enough. The gills are simulated by making a sparsely dubbed dubbing loop with the red angora goat or seal’s fur. Next a dubbing loop is prepared with a bunch of rabbit hair (guard hairs and underfur), cut from a hide strip. This is spun and wrapped as a hair hackle, stroking back the fibers after each turn. Make a whip finish, and cut the underside of the head flush with the hook shank.
