Gordon’s Bacon Bit

Fly: John Gordon, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Tiemco 2457 (size #14)
Thread: 8/0 Uni-thread. (Red or Fl. Orange)
Body: Dyed and cut Chamois

Note: The key to this fly is the dyed chamois. You will want to use real chamois for this and not the imitation type. I buy mine in the automotive dept at Wal-Mart. It is dyed with RIT dye #19 (Mauve). Follow the directions on the package. You don’t want to over dye the chamois. You want it to be dyed on the outside but still natural color on the inside. When you cut it into strips. This will give the fly a bi-colored appearance. Chamois drifts through the water very naturally. Fish this in riffles and faster water. Tying instructions
  1. Start thread just behind the hook eye.

  2. Wrap thread back to hook bend.

  3. Secure a thin 1 inch piece of chamois. With five wraps. Then wrap the thread back up hook shank. Stopping about ¼ inch before the hook eye. The chamois will be hanging at the bend. We will tie the other end down later.

  4. Apply a good coat of head cement to the thread wraps. Top and bottom along the hook shank. This will give the fly more durability.

  5. Lash down the other end of the chamois ¼ inch before the eye with five wraps.

  6. Whip finish and coat the thread only with head cement.
