Paraloop Emerger, tan

Fly: Martin Westbeek, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Partridge Klinkhammer #20
Thread: TMC 16/0 charcoal grey
Abdomen: Superfine dubbing, tan, rope-dubbed
Thorax: Squirrel SLF, natural grey
Wing: Whiting Silver Badger, from a Silver Saddle skin

Note: I use Whiting's Silver, Speckled and Golden badger hackles on all my hackled emerger patterns. An emerger is trying to break free, and that is why I don't like too sharp an outline to the pattern. The badger hackles give the fly blurred, fuzzy contours which I think looks more alive and "in motion" than other hackle. Substitute by a grizzle if you wish. Apart from that these saddles are excellent for paraloops. Thin, flexible yet strong stems (essential if you wrap them around a small diameter post, which helps to tie the paraloop down behind the eye) and a high barb count. The barb count is critical too, again because of the small diameter post.
