Blue Upright (clipped) |
|
|
|
Hook: | fine wire dry fly, all sizes |
Thread: | Dark grey |
Tail: | stiff hackle barbs from good quality cape, splayed with a couple of turns of thread at bend of hook. Webby hackle from a hen cape makes for a nice ‘cripple’ effect |
Abdomen: | slim dubbed dun fur, or stripped peacock herl or turkey biot, varnished lightly for strength |
Thorax: | slender dubbed blue dun fur |
Hackle: | good quality blue dun hackle, light or dark, wound two turns back and forward through thorax; clipped on underside so the fly sits flush with the surface |
Note: This basic hackle pattern can be tied in a range of colours to suit the prevailing hatch,, e.g.; red spinner, etc. I like the dark Blue Upright for low light situations, and the Red Quill for a spinner fall in sunlight. |
