Desolation Baitfish

Fly: Bob Wyatt, Photograph: Hans Weilenmann

Hook: Stainless, straight- eye, 2-3/0
Thread: white 6/0
Underbody: none, or if extra flash desired, silver coffee wrapper mylar (very strong)
Wing: white polar bair, with grey and/or pale olive) polar bear over. Long and sparse
Overbody: pearl mylar tubing. Tied in at eye, hanging forward off hook . Coat thread with 'hard as nails', then roll tube back over wing, creating a mylar body. Fray ends of the tubing to mix with polar bear hair and add sparkle. Add epoxy eyes. Varnish heavily, or epoxy

Background:

A descendant of the Surf Candy family, this lure was originally tied for the saltwater cutthroats of west-coast BC. A good European sea-trout pattern, as well as a good all round baitfish imitation. Found to be especially deadly for sea-run cutthroats when stripped in on the surface, like a panicked baitfish, bringing dramatic surface action. Fishes hook upwards if shank is weighted. Tied to look 'pale and interesting'.
